out all the parameters in this week's editorial.
- Linear's new DC/DC step-down

according to Paul McGoldrick, it's a "must look-at part...Really nicely
conceived and executed." And you'll want to see how the current editorial
"measures up"...
- Analog Devices wins praise in the hf/rfZONE
not only for its crosspoint switch
but its overall market savvy.

where he takes a "GLIMPS" at a new switch architecture from TeraCross and says that TranSwitch's
new framer/mapper is "worth the wait."
- The acquisitionZONE calls TI's
new Delta-Sigma ADC "a
must-look product for portable instrumentation."

a new development that will make monitor recycling simpler.
In analogZONE's general Calendar section, we're careful not to clutter your plate
with information you neither want nor need: we list only those shows
that would make our editors' must-see list (if budget were no object and
they lived for frequent flyer miles). See if you agree with our selections
for the cream of the crop. (The networkZONE
and greenZONE have their own comprehensive
calendar sections: check them out!)
Products of the Year
If you've browsed our product review archives lately (either by ZONE or now by Manufacturer),
you'll have noticed that Paul McGoldrick has pinpointed some standouts as
"Products of the Year" based on their exceptional merit and marketability.
Here's the official announcement, with quick
links to 2001's winners. Congratulations to all the recipients!
What's With the Saltshakers? About Lee Goldberg's
Vapor Index Rating
- On Lee Goldberg's product reviews (appearing in the green, i/o and
networkZONEs), you'll see a "vapor index" or "saltshaker"
rating. The vapor index is an arbitrary measure of the credibility of the
manufacturer's claims. The saltshaker icons represent how many "grains
of salt" the editor feels should be taken with the manufacturer's
claims, with fewer saltshakers being
better.
The rating system is calculated based on a variety of objective metrics,
including:
- The product's level of complexity,
- its proximity to the cutting edge of its design and process technologies,
- the past performance of the company,
- the company's ability to discuss its technology in plain English, and
- equal doses of hunches and arbitrary guesswork.
Comments are always welcome.
