I'm Dreaming Of A Green Christmas

It's the time of year when geeks of all persuasions look up from our cubicles and realize that the Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanzaa season has snuck up on us again. And if you're like many of us you're already hearing the siren call of the local Mega-Mart. But instead of completely supplicating ourselves at the altar of consumerism, perhaps it's time to take a step back from the situation and consider buying gifts that will give twice -- once by bringing pleasure to the recipient, and a second time when they help create a greener, more sustainable world for the celebrants of tomorrow's holidays.

Happily, "green consumerism" is no longer limited to hand-woven hemp sandals, wallets made from recycled tires, weird-smelling soaps made from organic yak butter, and other useless artifacts of the granola-munching set. While Toyota's slick new Prius hybrid was one of the first products to demonstrate that "green" and cool" could be used in the same sentence, we're seeing a growing list of well-designed products whose cool features don't include global warming.
