Sensorless PMS Motor Control: Part 1, Motor Phase Control
by Dennis L. Feucht

For years, the search has gone on to find a simple, elegant method for controlling the phase of permanent-magnet synchronous (PMS) or "brushless dc" motors without the use of external shaft position sensors. A simple, low-cost approach to phase control of three-phase PMS motors results from straightforward application of vector-based motor theory. It vectorially sums the induced voltage waveforms of motor windings and uses their zero-crossings to produce correctly-phased six-step commutation.
